Consumer focus: kettles and toasters

The kettle and toaster markets have been affected by a decrease in average price over the past few years.

The kettles market has seen the largest drop in average price from 22 [pounds sterling] in 2001 to 18 [pounds sterling] in 2005; the toasters average price has also dropped from 20 [pounds sterling] to 18 [pound sterling].

These price decreases have resulted in increasing demand with volume being at its highest level in five years. The value of the market has remained stable due to the fall in average price.

In addition to price-related factors, kettles and toasters are purchased for their design and appearance. This has been considered a most important mason for purchase when purchasing kettles and toasters.

Since 2001, the design and appearance factor has accounted for an increasing percentage of sales, from five per cent to 27 per cent of units sold in the kettle market and six per cent to 24 per cent of units sold in the toaster market.
